Every year our school holds a concert for all of our wonderful grandparents. This year I had to read a piece of writing that I wrote about the elderly, ( if you want to read it I have saved it as a blog post). I was also playing my flute in the band. The choir sang a few songs for all the grandparents, and the kapahaka preformed for them as well. There were lots of people that came as the hall was full of both students and their grandparents. After the concert was over the students who’s grandparents had come had a shared lunch outside. My grandma had come to see the concert so once I packed away my flute I went and joined my grandma for lunch (or what was left of it).

Every year our school (Te Awamutu Intermediate) creates a school magazine. This year I was lucky enough to be in the magazine committee along with Christina, Taegan, Laura, Bethany and Taleta. Being in the magazine committee is fun, we are basically in charge of the whole thing (with some help). We get to decide the order of everything that is going in the magazine. Tomorrow we get to go down to Rosetown Print and sort out some of the printing details. We also had to write letters to different companies asking them if they could sponsor us. Every class has to do a page to put in the magazine, this year we made a criteria for the classes saying what is required. We got to look through the magazines from previous years and found out a lot of effective things that we could do (and not do).

I think that this is a great opportunity for me. I have already learned heaps of new things and we still have a way to go.

What’s the definition of old? When should someone be called old? Age and looks is what first springs to mind. When we think of an old person we think of grey or white soft hair, wrinkly skin and thick glasses. A person that has physical difficulties and uses a walking stick. When I think of my grandma I think of none of these. I think; a lovely person who has always been there for me. A person who I love and a person I know loves me. Someone that spoils me with treats whenever I come over, and who has never forgotten my birthday or any other big event. When my grandma and I didn’t get to see each other much I remember she always wrote me letters. To me that meant a lot and I’m very grateful for everything she’s done. Her just being there is very important to me. My grandma is a wonderful person and I don’t know what I’d do without her.

On Friday me and some of my friends (Holly, Kaitlyn, Milly and Sarah) entered the BP Challenge. We were up against about 15 other teams and there was only four spots. The first challenge was to make some shoes, a hat and one item of clothing to wear at the beach. The thing was, we were only allowed to use 20 sheets of news paper, scissors, some string and a limited amount of masking tape. We also had a limited amount of time to do it in (I’m not sure how long). Holly volunteered to be the model and we all agreed as she was one of the smallest. We then set off to work straight away. Milly started on the shoes while the rest of us were doing the hat or the top. One of the criteria was that you had to be able to take it on and off without it breaking. We were all very busy doing our bit to help. Then the time finished and we were happy with the out come. The shoes were really good and even had laces made out of string. For the hat we made one of those pirate hats that are really to make. For the item of clothing we made a long top/poncho that had a tie up draw string on it. Holly was able to take everything off but not with ease. She then had to walk across the room and model the things we made while Milly did a little commentary on it. It was so much fun and we got to see the things the other teams made.

The next task was to make a free-standing hoop and a ball. We could use the same things as the first challenge but this time we only got 15 pieces of news paper. We set off right away and started rolling up bits of paper to make the base. It was all going really well until we tried to put the hoop on and make it a bit taller. All of a sudden it just flopped over and we were running out of time. We tried to fix it but we didn’t have any luck and the time ran out. Hardly any teams got theirs standing so that made us feel a bit better.

We were sure we wouldn’t make it through but we didn’t mind. We had a great time and that was all that that mattered. But just the other morning one of my friends told me that we had gotten through! I was astounded as none of us thought that we would make it.

I think that being comfortable emotionally is far more important than being comfortable physically. You use a diary to write down all your thoughts and feelings and is only meant for your eyes. Sometimes writing things down can help a lot and comforts you even more.

I think that popularity costs more. With being popular you have to change the way you are to meet the standards of others. You have to do what others think you should. But with being alone you get to just be yourself, not who others want you to be. You don’t have others to influence you so the only standards you have to strive to achieve is your own. Popularity has a very high price to pay, you have to sacrifice what you are for what others want. Aloneness however doesn’t have a price to pay, you just have to be yourself.
